PAVA HEDIONDA Opisthocomus hoazin Opisthocomus comes from the Greek opisthe, "behind" and komes, "hair", for the standing and scruffy wicks it has around the head. In Colombia : The hoacin, species of opistocomiforme bird, only representative of the genus Opisthocomus and of the family Opisthocomidae. It has no known subspecies. It resembles a pheasant, but is much slender, with a longer neck and tail, which it unfolds when flying, and with a remarkably small head. It can fly but only small distances. It measures about 60 cms. It inhabits the northeastern part of South America, specifically in the swampy areas surrounding the Amazon and Orinoco rivers.
